Volkers' Percheron (1880)

"Abbildungen vorzüglicher Pferde-Rassen", a series by Emil Volkers, German painter and lithographer known best for his landscapes and animal scenes.  For a time he worked for the Prince of Romania in Bucharest, but spent most of his career in Düsseldorf.

  1. Wow beautiful beautiful painting!!! Pertinent to Emil Volkers having worked in Romania I wanted to ask, I have been noticing some stunning Percherons on Utube in Romania, at horse gathering and at horse markets. These horses have exquisitely fine heads large eyes and lovely small ears, copious one sided thick long manes looking just like very very large wide chested welsh ponies. They have peeked my curiosity. Do these horses do you think represent some important old genes of the world wide percheron population? They also have black ones looking much the same. It's just I've never seen such extraordinary lovely looking percherons in Western Europe, America or else where. They also look nothing like the modern French ones, being altoghether more refined but not less robust. The Arab in them seems more apparent than other populations, is why Im thinking they are quite an old gene pool. They also seem to be anything but cold blooded, really quite hot animals for draught, enourmouse crests, level backs and huge quarters. Im fascinated! And just more than a liitle hooked. Unfortunately I dont speak or write Romanian so not managing to find out much. They do still have very very old state studs in Romania where some of the origianl breeding stock are kept, but more surprisingly most still seem quite numerous in that country on farms as working animals. How long that will continue I dont know but they are still found regularily at horse markets for sale too.
Any information would be much appreciated.
