Eaglesfield Eagle Eyeing

We stumbled across an eagle cam located in the southeastern United States at Berry College.  An eaglet hatched on February 22, 2014, from one of two eggs laid in January.

The term for "Eagle" is derived from Latin: aquila by way of French: aigle . . . which, through other derivatives, means "dark-colored, swarthy, or blackish" as a reference to the bird's plumage  . . . or from aquilo, meaning "north wind." Thus, our name "Eaglesfield" fits quite nicely given all the black horses and north winds we are fortunate enough to experience.  Click on the photo above to access the live eagle cam to check on the eaglet's progress.

The 2014 Sydney Royal Easter Show

The Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales hosts The Sydney Royal Easter Show every year since 1823.  Each year, this event touts close to 30,000 entries across 40 competitions and over 5,000 competition classes, all scrambling for a chance to win a prestigious Sydney Royal ribbon.  This show offers the largest agricultural prize pool in Australia with more than $750,000 awarded in prize money and over 15,000 trophies, certificates and medals awarded.

April 10th through the 23rd is when the competitions begin, which includes an enormous array of human skill, talent and accomplishment.  Judging, awarding and applauding the tastiest of edibles, the finest alpacas, the best show jumpers, the most skilled wood choppers, the ultimate rural achiever, cake decorators, finest wines, cheeses, coffees, and the list goes on and on and on.

The Royal hosts competitions that are world championships enabling the best of the best to compete determining the ultimate champions for 2014.  By continuing these annual competitions, the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales helps maintain a level of agricultural excellence as well as promotes a forward movement in its rural communities towards healthy and prosperous futures for generations to come.

Eaglesfield Percherons is pleased and honored for the opportunity to graciously accept the invitation made by the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales.  Brian will be judging draft horses at this incredible event in less than 60 days.  Thank you, Bruce Roy, for spotlighting this memorable occasion for us in this month's issue of Saddle Up.

Gentle Giants $100,000 Invitational Competition - Are You Ready to Rumble?

In anticipation for this weekend's RFD-TV's Gentle Giants $100,000 Invitational Competition being  held in Mesquite, Texas, we share with you one of our favorite videos of the North American Six Horse Hitch Classic Series.  This fast-paced slide-show features six horse hitches in competition over the past two years.  Photojournalist J. Ann Brodland has captured this sport's intensity, and its people -- some of whom have been walking in the footsteps of generations before them -- proudly carrying on and paving the way for generations to come.

We hope that you enjoy!

EP's Treasure Chest: It's All in the Family!

Many people are familiar with Colleen's dad's family and their relationship with horses.  Percheron Stallion, Justamere Showtime's, history is her family's story.

Few people know of the great horsemen/women on her mother's side.   Here is Uncle Bill Lamont having a little fun.

Although cattlemen will recognize him as the founder of the Speckle Park Cattle breed in Canada, he was a smooth and thoughtful horseman.

If you are unfamiliar with Speckle Park Cattle, here is a photo of one of  Bill and Eileen Lamont's first Speckle they raised.

Goodbye, Dear Friend

Well the guys are off to Gordyville for the Mid-America Draft Horse Sale.  We had a tough night at Eaglesfield loading horses. The colts all went on the van like veterans, but one little boy had a tough time saying goodbye to his first showmanship horse.

If you are lucky enough to end up with lot #239, "Flash," you not only have a champion gelding, you have a great babysitter who owns a big piece of a little boy's heart.

We Love Shanahan Harness!

Our favorite harness maker, Shanahan, put out the call for pictures of their harnesses in use.

My mind immediately went back 9 years to the beautiful Heart Mt. Shires harness. The heart that was built into the hip drop stood out perfectly against their grey unicorn mare!
